10 fashionable ways to rock a hair accessory

We’re all accustomed to wearing a few fashion accessories on ourselves to jazz up our overall look. A little ‘face furniture’ in the shape of a pair of trendy glasses, a cluster of bangles on your wrist to tie your look together or a stylish necklace to create the right focal point for your outfit. However, when it comes to hair accessories it can sometimes feel a little awkward! Hair accessories come in all different shapes and sizes – some are best for securing a hairstyle in place, some are good at getting your fringe off your face and others are literally just for show! With all that in mind, it can all be a bit hard to choose. 1 – Hair Claw Clips

With everything from film, television and music enjoying throwbacks to the 90’s with remakes, reboots and revivals, it’s no surprise that the trusty claw clip that was super popular 25 years ago has become the newest ‘it’ hair accessory! Also known as a butterfly clip and a banana clip, they come in many different sizes and an infinite number of styles, colours and patterns. Not only are they uber-trendy right now, but they are amazingly functional as well with the strength to hold and control quite significant amounts of hair! Use a claw clip to create a messy bun, a half-up half down look, a french twist or use a couple strategically placed along your ponytail to showcase its length. The hair claw look book really is endless!

2 – Scrunchies

It’s official: the scrunchie is back from the 1990s and it’s had a makeover. The baggy and puffy look remains but now with a huge variety of newer designs and fabrics to elevate the accessory for the 2020’s palette. Think Plaid, animal prints, patent leather, pretty florals, corduroys, sumptuous silks and more! There is now a fabric and style that’ll work perfectly with just about any outfit and frankly we’re obsessed!! Wear a scrunchie loose and low in a ponytail or over hair bands if wearing your ponytail higher. Try wrapping a scrunchie around a hair bun and loading up your wrists with scrunchies as an alternative piece of jewellery.

3 – Head Bands

Another hair accessory trend that we just can’t get enough of! Such a huge array of styles to choose from, plastic/metal, skinny/thick, fabric/plaited, comb and many more. If opting for the plastic or metal varieties then make sure to try it on for size before you buy as if it’s too small you’ll be feeling the pinch! A headband can pretty much be worked in with any style no matter the length or texture or your hair. Try a headband with mega volume behind it, a leather headband wrapped around a simple upstyle to elevate the look, or a headband worn lower and across the forehead for a boho vibe.

4 – Bandanas

With huge fashion houses like Gucci and Dior sending bandanas down the catwalk in late 2020 the trend has quickly trickled down to the masses for 2021. The trusty bandana hasn’t strayed too far from its classic paisley pattern that has a certain rock-chic vibe to it when worn folded into a strip and tied around the head in a jaunty knot. Other patterns like florals look cute covering the top of the head and tied at the back for an early 2000’s throwback feel.

5 – Mini Butterfly Clips

These tiny claw clips are another hair accessory that have joined the 1990s and 2000s fashion revival that’s sweeping through the fashion and pop culture of today. In clothing, skinny jeans have been tossed aside in favour of mum jeans with bum bags and jumpsuits everywhere again as well. It’s no surprise that these mini butterfly clips that were all the rage in the early 2000’s are back in a big way. Wear as many as you like in bright colours for a nostalgic look or keep it simple with one or 2 black ones attached to some side twists.

6 – Flower Crowns

Feeling super extra? It’s time for a flower crown. In recent years this look was saved for bridesmaids and Disney characters only, but we move with times! We’re not saying you’ll be wanting to wear this on a Tuesday afternoon to Coles when you’re picking up your avocados and frozen peas, but the flower crown is a smashing festival look that oozes boho chic. Be sure to pin your crown in place securely with a couple of bobby pins or you may lose it whilst headbanging to your favourite band.

7 – Hair Pins

One of the few hair accessories in our list that does not have 90’s and 2000’s vibes. The trusty hair pin transcends trends to simply be a hair classic that is both useful and aesthetically pleasing. We all use these pins to create hair buns and twists as they help us secure loose hairs in place and are easily hidden, but it’s their use as an ‘on display’ accessory that we find visually interesting. Coming in a whole heap of sizes and colours as well as jewellery encrusted versions. We like to keep things simple with several black or silver pins arranged across hair that’s tucked behind the ear for a minimalistic architectural look.

8 – Snap Clips

These little metal clips get their name from the sound they make when they’re closed. If you find one of these clips in your hand it’s virtually impossible to put it down as the feel and sound of the snapping then un-snapping is a little bit addictive! These come in all sorts of colours and sizes and hug your head shape nice and tight whilst securing unruly pieces of hair into place that aren’t quite long enough to fit into a ponytail or bun. The really colourful ones can look a little child-like but the monochrome coloured ones are smoking hot right now and look cool on their own or grouped together to create an interesting focal point in the hair.

9 – French Combs

Great for accentuating volume through the sides and top of head or for securing hair in place that insists on falling down onto your face. Lot’s of different sizes available to suit all hair lengths and thicknesses – the bigger and wider handling hair that is longer and thicker with ease. Many have fancy detailing attached which can look like it’s gloriously defying gravity on the side of your hair for a dressy look. A little bit of nifty coordination required to put in with an upside-down backwards motion that is then flipped over, locking itself in place.

10 – Barrettes

This clip is definitely reclaiming its cool-factor! Classically used for gathering and fastening the hair in a half up, half down style. With lots of different sizes available and a huge array of different finishes to choose from including our favourite tortoise shell for a retro look or a more basic plain metal finish to let the hair do the talking. These clips can be on the heavy side, so it’s important to choose the sized clips that’ll suit your hair length – otherwise it’ll be constantly slipping out.
