2020 has been a real roller-coaster ride for all of us and a year that most of us would be happy to leave behind.
Franck Provost is taking a look back at 5 hair trends of that we think are better best forgotten before delving into 5 of our hair trend predictions for 2021.
The hairdressers at Franck Provost Paddington are feeling great about what the new year has in store for your hair.
2020 and the hair trends it can keep: Quarantine Hair
Whilst maybe not a trend, we think we were all guilty of rocking some sort of ‘quarantine hair’ look this year. For a few months, it felt like the world had stopped and the need for general hair grooming pretty much stopped with it. 7-day old top-knots, hair that can’t remember the last time it saw some shampoo or a brush, roots as long as your arm, DIY fringes and other isolation restyles…all can be happily left in 2020!
2020 and the hair trends it can keep: Neon Green Roots
We’re sorry Billie Eilish – we love you and whilst we still think that neon is having a real moment in the clothing fashion world, the ‘root pop’ is a no from us. We can all agree that this look is a real head-turner but the high maintenance involved to keep the colour looking fresh and the limitations it puts on the clothes you can wear without clashing means we’re content for this hair trend to stay in 2020.
2020 and the hair trends it can keep: Bleached front bits
It’s back from the 90’s for a piece of the hair trend pie! Two chunky pieces of hair pulled out from a ponytail, bleached to within an inch of their lives and then slicked with wet-look gel for good measure. Not to be confused with a beautiful balayage, this fashion faux-pas of 2020 should have stayed in 1996 with Ginger Spice and the rest of the Spice Girls.
2020 and the hair trends it can keep: Micro Fringes
There’s no denying that the ‘baby bang’ can look spectacular on the right person. The trouble is that not many people are the ‘right person’! Popping back up every few years in the hopes of a comeback, we’re quick to realise that without the perfect oval-shaped face the micro fringe can leave us looking a little bit cringe! Ask your hairdresser to assess your face shape to see what style will suit you best. Maybe you’re one of the lucky few that can rock this style with a bang!
2020 and the hair trends it can keep: Grey Blonde
Grey or silver blonde hair has been huge for a few years now, stunning but perhaps one of the hardest colours to achieve. Plus being practically a full-time job trying to maintain those smoky hues with weekly toners and 6 weekly root touch-ups. Cold and ashy is out and soft and warm is just what you need!
2021 and the hair trends we’re predicting will be huge: The Shag Haircut
This choppy layered hair that was all the rage in the ’70s has been modernised for 2021 and we are here for it! Casual, effortless and styled with heaps of texture for a very rock and roll look that has been seen on A-listers like Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift and Zendaya already to name a few. Works well on most lengths that have an element of natural movement which is enhanced by sweeping fringes, layered crowns, feathered ends and altogether super low maintenance.
2021 and the hair trends we’re predicting will be huge: The Mullet
One of the most iconic hairstyles of the ’80s is making its way back into fashion in a big way! Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevigne and Halsey have all recently been seen sporting the mullet, embracing its rebelliousness, alternative vibe. Business at the front, party at the back! It’s the haircut for girls who aren’t afraid to stand out in a crowd and want to break away from that more conventional look. The 2021 version of the mullet is softer than its 80’s cousin as the sides are less dramatic left wispier creating an indefinitely more wearable look that is surprisingly flattering and cool.
2021 and the hair trends we’re predicting will be huge: The Perm
Perhaps the most surprising of all the hair trends for 2021! Instead of the frizzy curls of the 80’s and 90’s the modern perm is all about soft voluptuous curls that enhance movement and pump up the volume. With mega-babe Gigi Hadid already jumping on the perm bandwagon, it’s perfect for us girls with naturally poker-straight hair looking for a bit more oomf and envy that juicy, bouncy, curly look! Perm rod selection, new techniques and the latest innovations in perming solutions allow us to perm with less damage and more control to create beautiful loose curls and beachy waves.
2021 and the hair trends we’re predicting will be huge: Curtain Bangs
Or ‘Curtain Fringe’s’ are serving us gorgeous 60’s and 70’s vibes. Embraced by all the big names including Hilary Duff, Jennifer Lopez and Kendall Jenner it’s the super soft and versatile way to dip your toes into the world of fringes. Centre-parted, long and textured on the ends – it’s not only super flattering and an easy way to add interest to your hair but it’s also the easiest of fringes to manage with a low commitment factor due the longer length which will grow out seamlessly with the rest of your hair if you decide to grow it out.
2021 and the hair trends we’re predicting will be huge: The Bob Haircut
Never really goes away. The ultimate in French Chic, the bob has been huge in 2020 with megastars like Kim Kardashian going for the chop and this trend is set to continue into 2021 as strong as ever! If you’re thinking of taking the plunge and going for total classic remember that the bob has a variation that’s flattering for everyone! – short bobs, lobs, A-line, layered, textural and blunt collarbone bobs to name just a few. All of them are super versatile in their styling – curly, wavy or straight with a centre part or a deep side part it really is the chameleon of all haircuts.
Now that you know what’s in and what’s out, which 2021 trend will you be adopting?
