It doesn’t matter if you call it a fringe or a bang, if you’re looking to get yourself a fancy new fringe but don’t know which one to choose then fear not; There is almost always a fringe hairstyle to suit everyone and every face shape!
A fringe is the perfect way to add a little something new into your hairstyle whilst maintaining your length or current style. But there’s no one size fits all for fringes. So, before you rush to the phone to book an appointment with your hairdresser, Franck Provost Manly sheds some light on choosing the right fringe for your face and what to ask your hairdresser when you go to get it cut!
Who knew choosing a fringe could be so exhausting?? Luckily, we’ve done all the research leg-work for you with our Franck Provost Fringe lowdown – a selection of our favourite fringes that are smoking hot right now!
Serving us gorgeous 60’s and 70’s vibes. Embraced by all the big celebrities, actresses and musicians – it’s the super soft and versatile way to dip your toes into the world of fringes. Centre-parted, long and textured on the ends – it’s not only super flattering on just about every face-shape but an easy way to add interest to your hair and also one of the easiest of fringes to manage. If you decide to grow it out, it is seriously low commitment due to its longer length which will grow out seamlessly with the rest of your hair.
With the re-emergence of the shag-haircut has come the shaggy fringe, a revamp of the 1970’s rocker version that is oh so trendy this year! The mid to long length textural fringe is giving us major boho vibes. This type of fringe looks great on a variety of face shapes. It’s worn messy and, in any direction, which adds to the carefree feeling it exudes. The fact that the shaggy fringe is meant to look messy and unkempt is a major bonus when it comes to maintenance – trips to the salon for tidy-ups can be spaced out nicely several weeks apart.
Not the easiest of bangs to pull off but there is no denying that the baby bang can look stunning on the right person. If you’ve got that perfectly shaped oval face and you’ve got no problems with letting your face take centre stage, then take the plunge and show off those eyebrows with either a blunt or choppy version of this rebellious bang that sits high on your forehead. This length bang can work quite well on haircut lengths that are short through to bobs and mid length collarbone skimming. To keep it looking short and sharp you’ll need regular trips to the salon for tidy-ups making the baby bang anything but low-commitment!
Probably one of the most classic fringe cuts out there. It grazes the eyebrows beautifully acting as the perfect frame to showcase your eyes. The heavy, straight across look is quite bold when teamed with any haircut be it long or short. These work really well on oblong shaped faces and are also a great way to camouflage out a larger forehead. Slightly more high maintenance than other fringes due to the length that sits right by the eyes. Be prepared to pop back into the salon every few weeks to keep it in check.
Perfect if your hair likes to naturally part on the side. Usually sitting on the cheekbones or lower they perfectly elongate the face making them ideal for rounder face-shapes but ultimately flattering on most face shapes. A real classic look that never goes out of style, the side sweep lends itself nicely to many different styling options either straight or wavy and looks really cute cascading down when you wear your hair up. The textural ends ensure that the look is soft, feminine and touchable – the combination of this and the longer length make them perfectly low-commitment and easy-breezy to grow out if you decide it’s no longer for you!
Cut in a perfectly straight, blunt, horizontal line mid-forehead. These bangs look best when matched with a bob or mid-length hair cut. If you like to make an impactful statement with your hair and you’ve got an oval face shape then go for it. These style bangs can also be great at balancing out a heart shaped face and are also quite flattering if you have a high forehead. Due to the length, blunt line and its precise look you do need to keep on top of the upkeep with regular visits to the salon for bang trims!
These have a definite 1990’s feel, which is everything right now. Longish, eye-skimming and piecey with a sort of rounded out look that blends into the sides of your haircut – It’s a really great option for people that want to make a small change that has a big impact! Works really well on finer hair types as it can help the hair appear more voluminous. Great for girls that have a square shaped face as the feathery wisped ends add softness. The wispy fringe is another amazing option for those of you that are just looking to test the waters in the world of fringes as it’s an easy one to grow out if you decide you’re not keen after all. It does sit in the medium commitment level range as it’s not essential to have it trimmed all the time, but it may start to annoy you when it begins to poke you in the eyes!
With everybody embracing their hair’s natural texture now it’s no surprise that we’re seeing heaps of curly and wavy fringes everywhere! Curly and wavy bangs are best cut freehand on dry hair to avoid too much length being taken off due to the springing up effect. The shape of the bangs can be adapted to suit the individual and the face shape making it super versatile – the only necessity being a naturally curly or wavy textured hair! As with most curly or wavy hair, trips to the salon tend to be less frequent than those who have straighter textured hair making this bang nice and low maintenance.
Still not 100% sure which fringe is going to suit you best? Need some more help figuring out what face shape you have? Or have you seen a fringe that’s not on our list and want to know if it could work for you? We got you!
